About

In 1825, Michael Milton and his wife, Martha Clark, along with several slaves, blazed a trail from the Amite River near Benton Ferry Landing and founded Walker. The resulting village that grew up was first named Milton Old Field. A post office was first established in the area in 1856 and named in honor of Dr. William E. Walker of Springfield, a state legislator respresenting the area. He died of disease during the Civil War while serving as an officer in the Confederate States Army.  It was renamed Walker in 1890. The Town of Walker was incorporated in 1909, and its corporate limits now include the former incorporated village of Corbin, which was annexed in 1971 after a municipal merger election. Walker unofficially became a city in 2002, when its population first exceeded 5,000. The change became official when Gov. Bobby Jindal formally proclaimed Walker a city with a Proclamation dated June 24, 2011 stating the new population of Walker to be 6,138.

Walker Among Best Towns in Louisiana for Young Families

Town receives high marks in education and growth

San Francisco, CA (October 9, 2013) – NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy website, conducted a study on the best towns in Louisiana for young families, and Walker is in the top ten.

NerdWallet ranked Walker second after assessing the town’s cost of living, education system, and economic growth. The town’s school district received an eight-out-of-ten rating from the education nonprofit, GreatSchools. Walker’s residents also experienced the third-highest growth in income compared to all towns in the top ten.

NerdWallet sought to better inform young families and parents-to-be by analyzing towns across the state according to five criteria:

Public school ratings

  1. Median home value
  2. Cost of homeownership
  3. Median income
  4. Economic growth

“Walker, located in Livingston Parish, is home to excellent schools. This year, three of the parish’s schools received recognition from U.S. News & World Report for being top in the nation,” said NerdWallet analyst Mike Anderson. “Additionally, the community’s business parks have helped cultivate new opportunities for residents.”
